Brief Background
St. Martin’s Community Hospital is one of the health facilities under the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire (ADUS) and a member of Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM).
The facility was established in 1898 to provide essential health services to people of Malindi and surrounding communities.
St. Martin’s Hospital is located in the Southern Region of Malawi in Mangochi District. This is a lake district, located at Malindi 20km from town on a narrow strip of land between Lake Malawi on the West and the Gome Hills to the East.
This Anglican Hospital started as a small clinic with one nurse in 1898 to serve the sick missionaries and their families. Later the service was extended to the passengers waiting to board the lake vessel the Chauncey Maples’ on its trips to North Malawi (Nyasaland then).
Catchment Area
The Hospitals catchment area consists of 39 villages with a population of about 40,000 people within a radius of 15km. it also serves as a referral hospital for as a far as Makanjira, 100km North of Malindi. The people are mainly of Yao and Nyanja tribe, both Islamic and Christians. Almost 90% of population live of subsistence farming, due to over population they do not harvest enough food to carry them to the next harvesting season.
The fishing industry mainly Usipa was a good source of income, but over the past years the catch has declined creating a vicious cycle of poverty and malnutrition.
There is poor health status of the people particularly young children and pregnant women.
